In an industry dominated by the male folk, a crop of female artistes in the Nigerian music scene are gaining huge visibility, getting credibility for their hard work, and showing that skirts can also strut the limelight.We present to you three fast rising divas in Nigerian music landscape who are using their immense talents to impact their world and also impact their bank accounts(lol).
OMAWUNMI MEGBELE
In 2007, OMAWUMI auditioned for Idols West Africa and 6 months later, after dazzling her audience with captivating perfomance, became the 1st Runner-Up, Idols West Africa. Since then she has numerous performances on the stage with top local acts like D’Banj, 2face, P-Square and International acts like Chaka Demus and Pliers to her belt, and hit theme songs for corporations like Malta Guinness and MTN plus her new hit single ‘In The Music’.
Omawumi Megbele was 1st Runner up In West African Idols 2007. She Won Best Female Vocal Performance and Next Rated Artist at 2009 Hip Hop World Awards. WAJE IRUOBE
Iruobe Waje came into the limelight after featuring on P-Square's mega hit 'Do me'. Since then she's released various singles, appeared as a finalist on MTV Base's Advance warning and waxing stronger.Without a single album to her credit, she is one of the most visible and immensely talented female acts in the Nigerian music industry.Even Wikipedia calls her:'The lady whose vocal range covers three octaves'. The lady behind the remake of P-Square’s “Omoge Mi” and the female voice in the duo’s 2008 hit track “Do Me”, Banky W "Thief my Kele",M.I "One Naira".She has graced several magazine covers,and was recently appointed as a celebrity judge on STARQUEST.At the 201 Headies, she clinched the Best vocalist award.THE NET NG.COM puts it this way:'Even though we all feel a Waje album is long overdue, anytime she puts out something new, we all want to listen. TIWA SAVAGE
At the age of 16 Tiwa Savage was destined to sing backup for George Michael. While puffing on her trombone near the back of the orchestra, Savage gazed through the rows of musicians and decided to position herself in the spotlight - singing in the front row.
An instant classic, folks about town in London started to take notice and she was soon sharing a stage with the "Faith" singer. Cementing her fate as an infectious musical force Savage went on to sing backup for Mary J. Blige, Destiny's Child, Chaka Khan, Spice Girl Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson, Andreas Bocelli, Sting, 50 Cent, The Black Eyed Peas, Eminem and Robbie Williams.She broke into the industry with her hit single 'Kelekele love' which has become a favourite amongst music buffs.In 2011 she was picked along side M.I and Banky W for the Henessy Artistry Brand ambassadors.She is currently one of the co-host of The Nigerian idols and recently was featured in the remix of Flavour Nabania's 'Oyi'.She has been on the cover of magazines like Genevieve, Exquisite,Complete Fashion.e.t.c.
