HUMOUR AS A TOOL FOR YOUTH EMPOWERMENT
HUMOUR AS A TOOL FOR YOUTH EMPOWERMENT
Nigeria is the most populous black nation on earth and the origin of some of the world’s most accomplished people but the nation’s vessels appears to be anchored at a state of rest, so that our best is yet to be expressed within our borders. Youth unemployment rate in Nigeria has hit 41.6 per cent, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, has said.
According to him, in gender-specific terms, the rate is 23.3 per cent for males and 17 per cent for females within the age of 15 and 24 years. He stated that such a high unemployment rate, among other social indicators, is one of the major causes of social menace and poverty in the country. The governor said the country's current economic efforts will only be a snapshot if the real economic agents who are the youths are not part of the transformation. These stated all hope is not lost concerning the Nigeria of our dreams, as there is a new breed of young Nigerians using the tool of humour to empower themselves to maximum productivity and achievement. Thanks to the progenitors , the likes of Mohammed Danjuma, Atunyota Akpoborieme(Ali Baba),who have made stand up comedy a craft young Nigerians are making a living from. The visible growth of this industry is a pointer to the fact that the talents of youngsters discovered and honed can become an economic lifeline that will shelter them from poverty.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Leke Alder 's speech titled:KEEP STANDING delivered at THE PLATFORM is indeed the capsule we all need to revitalize our dreams and get back into the ring , ready to fight for our dreams .Even if we have one leg remaining as a nation, we will keep standing, till another leg grows out of the one leg.In the face of life's storms and rains(and it did rained today), we must keep the hope alive.Fight one more round,go one more extra mile, send in that business proposal again, start that business all over again.Yes we may have messed up as a nation and as individuals, but we can,t afford to give up the fight. The blows of life musn' t be allowed to amputate and frustrate us into a life of gloom and doom.We must keep the hope alive .Bulls cannot be bullied.

SHUT UP, START UP, AND STEP UP

SHUT UP, START UP, AND STEP UP
‘Don’t talk about what you are going to do, instead do it, and let others talk about it’-Steve Harris
When I decided to publish the M.O.V.E Achievers Compendium (Success Secrets of Nigerian Achievers), which by the way was a sold out publication, I procrastinated severely.I focused more on talking about rather than taking steps towards its realization. Eventually, it was published but I wasn’t prompt in taking action. I know you can relate with this story. You have projects you should be working on, a song you should be recording, a business you ought to have started .But you are doing more talking than taking steps towards the realization of your dream.
In the late 80’s he was of Nigeria’s biggest rising stars. The first actor to be paid a million naira for a movie role. He starred in several award winning roles and soon became a household name. Richard Mofedamijo never started from the top, in 1982 while in the university, he played the lead role in Echoes of wrath which was his first exposure to Television. He landed his first professional lead role in the film The Last Omen. He wasn’t just talking about his passion to be a renowned actor, he dared to take a chance on his dream, and today,he is a big shot in his area of expertise.
The challenge for many individuals is that they are waiting for the perfect timing in order to step out and be all they have been wired to be.A perfect timing is an illusion. Stepping out with divinity is the secret weapon of achievers.
It all started with a vision, to publish a magazine that empowers youth for change, in her hostel at the University of Jos. Amazingly, Rise grew and evolved rapidly into the grand daddy of all youth gatherings in Nigeria.
Today, this young but uncompromising lady heads one of Nigeria’s fastest growing youth businesses with revenues in tens of millions. Toyosi Akerele is a model to countless young Nigerians because she dared to shut up start up her business and now stepping up on the ladder to greatness.
Its time to stop complaining and start taking steps towards the writing of your own success story.More Action Less Talk(M.A.L.T).Go make it happen.

I AM PREGNANT

I AM PREGNANT
Hi dearest, I’m excited to have you here, hmmm, very sure your mind is wondering if you are really reading the right material. Well, yes you are. I can hear you repeatedly saying, “I am not pregnant”, by the way, what kind of title is this? Ok, just take a chill pill and let’s get started.............
Many years ago, when you were leaving heaven, God did not send you to a family in other to occupy space, He put some very unique and wonderful things inside of you so, that is what you are pregnant with. Well, you may think you cannot do anything, that is a big lie from the devil, there is something so unique about you that the only person who can do it and will do it beautifully well is you. I don’t need to ask you if it’s weird for a woman to carry a baby in her all through her life cause it is obviously weird. It’s also very weird for you to carry that beautiful gift on your inside without giving birth to it inotherwords, expressing it.
Dearest, enough of carrying the due pregnancy around, well, your expected date of delivery is now, your labour should start now and that beautiful baby should be delivered now. No matter how trivial you think it is, it could be that smile, that listening ear, that writing skill, well, whatever it is, your due date is now. Please do not die with that pregnancy, neither should you grow old with it.
The world is in a hurry to see that beautiful baby born. Hurry now to the labour room, common pushhhhhhhhhhhhhh and deliver that beautiful gift that would put smiles on the world’s face.
Loads of Love,
Smiling D.

FIGHT FOR THE DREAM

FIGHT FOR THE DREAM
Dreams on their own don’t come to fruition, until the dreamer is ready to stay in the dreamers ring and unwilling to give up the fight. In the personal pursuit of my dreams, I have had reasons to give up and like the youths will say ‘lock up’. But I have decided to keep at it and be willing to confront whatever stops me from being a champion. When Benjamin Disraeli attempted to speak in the Parliament for the first time they booed him into silence , but he said ‘Though I sit down now , the time will come when you will all hear me’.And they did.He became one of Britain’s best orators and Prime ministers. He fought for his dream.
Forget the illusion that your dreams will be achieved on a platter of gold. You, ve got to be willing to throw in more punches till you emerge a victor. Perhaps, others have dragged you down in life. They ve discouraged you from dreaming. May be they resented the fact that you wanted to move up or do something significant with your life. Take heart, its never too late to start dreaming and adding creams (actions) to your dreams. Dale Turner assserts’Dreams are renewable. No matter what our age or condition , there are still untapped possibilities within us and new beauty waiting to be born’. Yes! There will be times when you will feel like your life has come to a screeching halt, and you are going nowhere. It is then you need to stay in the fight and get the winner’s crown.
Tyler Perry’s currently the richest entertainer in the world as confirmed by Forbes magazine, childhood in New Orleans was marked by a pattern of abuse by his father, and the bitterness from the broken relationship became a source of unforgiveness as Perry grew older, eventually moving to Atlanta. It was only after channeling his struggles through writing, that he found a deeper calling.
After praying for God to help him to forgive his father, whom he later reconciled with, Perry turned his turbulent story of forgiveness and redemption into the stage play I Know I’ve Been Changed. But after several unsuccessful shows, the 28-year-old playwright was broke and even lived on the streets on Atlanta when he couldn’t make ends meet. But even in the difficult times, Perry never doubted his calling. He fought for his dream.
Eventually, I Know I’ve Been Changed became a sleeper hit that offered audiences a refreshing glimpse into the hard, and often times funny things, that God can deliver you from. The play launched Perry into the status of a hot up-and-coming writer.
The success led him to adapt Bishop. T.D. Jakes’ bestselling book Woman Thou Art Loosed into a stage production—a project that exploded into a blockbuster hit. The buzz garnered from the play gave way to several feature films, which Perry writes, directs and acts in, often portraying a variety characters, including the good-natured (but often over-the-top) grandmother Medea.
Hold on to that dream of your yours, be willing to pay the price and in order to be inducted into the champion’s hall of fame.I will read your success story.

ROLEMODELS
‘I love and respect Tuface, Dagrin, Dido, 9ice, 2pac.These guys make me want to deliver my best whenever I listen to their music’

THE GOSPEL OF DRESS SENSE
ACCORDING TO CHRISTOPHER OBI

WHAT DO YOU DO AS AN IMAGE CONSULTANT?
An Image consultant is a professional who has a keen eye for helping individuals get the best out of their outfits. As such ,as an image consultant, I help guide individuals in creating the right image which puts them in control of their image instead of their image controlling them, simplifying their wardrobes, also in helping them get outfits that really reflects their personalities,so as to help them project an appealing, powerful, well coordinated, appropriate and authentic look which reflects their inner beauty and also giving them an edge.People need to understand that their looks could be the shine that will make them outshine their peers, the extra that will make them extra ordinary
WHAT LED YOU TO IMAGE CONSULTING?
While growing up, I noticed that I had high sense of care and concern for my looks and the way I dress. I also saw that it is something I do with ease without any stress. I have won several awards as the best dressed in various organizations, right from primary school till date.More so, no day passes that people don't compliment my dressing either my shirt, shoes etc with this ,I saw the need to also help people look better and appreciate themselves more, irrespective of their body structure, size, and financial power.

FINAL WORDS
We live in a society where we are more money driven than value driven.Money is the medium of exchange for adding value.Nobody has ever found it cheap to achieve their dreams. To dream is cheap, but to interpret those dreams you need to pay the price. Don’t be ashamed to pay the price and very soon you will get your own prize for making a difference in the lives of people.

FROM THE LAB TO THE NEWSROOM(

YOUNGSTER OF THE WEEK
FROM THE LAB TO THE NEWSROOM
(TOYOSI OGUNSEYE:-CNN AWARD WINNING JOURNALIST ,WRITING HER WAY TO GREATNESS)
There is no better time than now to recognize and push to the front burner of our minds the enterprising dogged spirit of the Nigerian.Inspite of the daily grisly Nigerian avoidable challenges we experience , we still soar above fierce challenges, choosing to be proactive in living our best lives.Toyosi ogunseye’s story is worth telling as it will inspire and incite generations to come , to dare to pursue their passion and make their mark.A senior correspondent with Punch Newspaper, Toyosi, clinched the MSD Health and Medical Awards at the Cable News Network’s African Journalist Awards in Sandton,South Africa, for her story titled-LUTH’S Ransome Kuti Center:Cauldron where two babies die weekly.Ogunseye has written about a wide range of subjects from crime to science and technology and was shortlisted amongst 27 finalists for this year’s award. She has worked with the Sun and Newsstar Newspapers, and has an M.sc degree in Media and communications from The Pan African University.
As a Talent development coach, and a student of the school of life, I learn from everything. Here are a few lessons we can learn from Toyosi's story:
THE PURSUIT OF PASSION
Toyosi started pursuing her passion for the written word as a second year Biochemistry student of The University of Lagos. In her words:’ In my second year in the university, I was discussing with a friend of mine. It was my twentieth birthday and I was telling her that I wanted to write and she said she wanted to make jewelry and I told her that we should make it happen, that we don’t have to wait till graduation before we pursue our passions. I had this journal where I used to write so many things, so the following day I just picked a copy of ‘The Sun’ newspaper; I looked at the address behind and went there. I asked to see the news editor whom was Mr. Musa Egbemana at the time, I said ‘Good afternoon sir, my name is Toyosi Ogunseye, a second year bio-chemistry student of the University of Lagos and I want to write for you’. It was production time, he looked at me and had this expression of ‘excuse me, where are you coming from?’ I showed him my journal, one big looking tattered object, and tried to prove to him that I could write, and he said ‘no, no, no, if you want to write for me this is not the kind of thing I want to see, so he said go bring me two stories from anywhere and come with it on Friday by 10.00 am’.She picked it up from there and dared to take a chance on her writing talent inspite of being a Biochemistry student as at that time.Every one walking the face of the earth has a passion, something that animates you and at the same time fascinates you.Its your responsibility to find it , and fan your passion into flame.
GO THE EXTRAMILE
Going the extramile is about adding value beyond what is expected of you,its doing more than you are paid and going beyond the regular in order to birth irregular results. The story that won her the award was created as a result of her willingness to go the extramile.According to her: ‘There was this lady in my office – my Chairman’s secretary – that took her child to LUTH and was not satisfied with the treatment she got. She came back to the office and was discussing with my boss, how she went to LUTH and two children died in her presence and she couldn’t believe she was in Lagos , in a Federal Government Hospital . Then my boss called me up and the woman gave me the summary of all that happened. My boss asked me if there was any story in it and I requested to go and investigate it. The following day I went to LUTH, and I couldn’t go inside the ward because it’s quite small. The doctors, nurses, and mothers will identify a stranger. Each mother stays with the child, and you must know someone or must be visiting. It’s a small room, and a stranger can’t just walk into it else you risk drawing attention your way. So I figured if I must succeed then I will require inside help. My opportunity came when I saw a mother shouting at a doctor, I don’t know what it was about but figured she was displeased with the treatment her child was receiving, so I went to her later and introduced myself and my aim, and needed a disguise for a week. She told me not to worry, that she will pretend that I am her younger sister, and said we should go in. The disguise worked, because everyone thought I was her younger sister that was looking after the baby. I stayed there for forty-eight hours and saw things I did not believe I would see, I saw more than enough to write the story."She recalled. Her ability to stretch herself paid off, as she clinched the award in her category. In life opportunities are created on the platform of difficulties, its your capacity to see the positivity in the problem that will lead to your long awaited break.
PERSISTENCE
She has been applying for this award for seven years, and eventually her persistence and hardwork paid off.I recall with nostalgia my early days of striving to become a sought after columnist, i started out with majority of my articles not getting published, but today the story has changed, as its paying off.Its been said that persistence wears out resistance, persistence made the snail reach the ark.Dare to stick to your convictions and passions, it will soon pay off if you faint not.
Some of the greatest feats ever accomplished by individuals came as a result of the fact that these individuals were smart enough to know that those feats were not impossible. Now that you have been inspired by Toyosi"s story, what can you do to begin to rewrite the story of your life? Its your time to rise out of obscurity to becoming renowned in your area of expertise.I will read your success story.

HOW TO SEE MONEY EVERY WHERE

One of the enigmas in our life is money. The better we know how to relate with it the more pleasant our sojourn on earth will be.
Some months ago, I coached a young man that told me that whenever he does not have money he vomits and get sick. Some other people have told me different things like' I feel depressed and sad'
The Truth...
Not having money in your pocket does not get you depress but how you think about money that get you depress. Things or people can't stress us rather it is how we think about them that cause our stress.
You must learn to change what money means to you. If you do, you will start seeing money everywhere. If you see money as an end in itself, you will put an end to your flow of idea and creativity but if you see it anything you can use to accomplish your heart desire, you will never be stranded.
My story...
I have had the privilege to initiate for 4 to 5 businesses. However none of them I started with my own money. The reason being that, years ago I changed my perception about money.
The perception that can help You...
Money is not the paper you have in your pocket. The paper only represents money. Money is anything that you can use to exchange for whatever you want. Money is a reward you get for solving a problem. Wherever you can see problem or frustration you can make money there if you develop your capacity to solve problem.
To make money, don't pray for more money rather pray for more capacity to solve bigger problem. The opportunity to make money is inherent in our capacity to solve problem. Money is not scarce. It is capacity to solve problems that is.
We live in the world where problem will not cease. The day problem cease that is the day the world stop existing.
Develop fascination for people's frustration. Check out your own frustration too. Solve it for yourself and you will be amazing you have a potential money making machine at your disposal.
I believe you are not poor because you are black but because you are overlooking the opportunity to solve problem for a lot of people.
Till we see again, note this: money is only a tool to get your desire and a reward for solving a problem.

RAISE YOUR GAME

RAISE YOUR GAME
UNVEILING PSQUARE,S WINNING FORMULAR
It is in no doubt that the immensely endowned(like Dbanj will say)music duo Psquare, are not any where close to their busstop musically. They are raising their game , touring relentleslesly around the world, consistently churning out monster hits and increasing their fanbase. This piece is in no way idolizing them , but on the flipside a pointer to teaching you strategies we can adapt from their success in the entertainment industry and adapt to our various life,s pursuits. Because success leaves clues.
START SMALL
The story of Psquare,s love affair with music started in St Murumba secondary school Jos, where they joined their school music and drama club where they began singing, dancing, and miming songs by Mc hammer, Bobby brown, and Michael jackson.Fastforward to 2001 , Psquare won THE GRAB DA MIC competiiton and hence Benson and Hedges sponsored their debut album LASTNITE.Today Psquare has left their small beginnings and has become one of the most sought after afro hiphop groups to emerge out of Africa .As a Talent development expert , I come across a lot of talented people who desire to take a chance on their talents, but are unwillingly to start small. My usual charge to such fellows is for them to start small from where they are.Start with recording a demo, start with writing that chapter, start wiith acting as an extra in that soapopera.Bellanaija moved from a blog to a full fledged lifestyle content providing website,A.y moved from being Alli baba,s personal assistant to becoming a whizkid in the comedy terrain.
Though your beginning may be small , your latter end shall greatly increase.
UNIQUE SELLING POINT
In the business terrain, your uniqueness is the path to reigning.Psquare is not just sought after because they make goood music, beyond that , their uniqueness lies in being able to dance and play music instruments. These skills has given them mileage over other acts in the industry. If you are not distinct, you will soon go extinct.Find your uniqueness and stick to it.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
They discovered very early in their career that personal image is a key trait to being on top of their game.Peter and Paul are always on point when it comes to their grooming. The secret to gaining acceptance lies in improving your packaging.Image is everything and people still judge a book by its cover.
EMBRACE CHANGE
They are an evolving duo who are keen about getting better in their craft. From the collabos with Weird Mc and Tuface, to adapting to the trends of the industry, making sound track that makes you leave your boardroom to the ball room, they have consistently mastered the dynamics of making monster hits. They should be lecturers in our music schools teaching Hitsmaking 101.Innovation is key to enterprise development, and complacency weakens a brand.
EXCELLENCE
This group,s thirst for excellence is inspiring.Psquare is a wonder to behold when it comes to their music videos. The video for their second album held # 1 posiiton on the MTV Base chart for eight straight weeks, they have an ever growing fanbase in South Africa and other parts of the world.Little wonder, telecommunications company , Globacom adopted them as one of its brand ambassadors paying them a whooping fee of #250million.Their dedication and drive has seen them become game changers in their industry.
Dear friend, its time to stop making excuses and start liivng your dreams. The Psquare tale is a proudly Nigerian success story worth telling. There is a king in you, unveil it, and step into your royalty.

WHAT KIND OF LIFE DO YOU WANT TO LEAD.......

I used to have some time out with a very wealthy man. This time paid up for me big time. He taught me a lot of things about creating abundant and leading an exceptional life.
In one of this classes, he asked me a very deep and life changing question: What kind of Life Do you want to lead?' I was dump founded for a while. Before that time, I had always want to be rich but I have not really get to ask myself what kind of I intended to lead. He gave me an assignment: Go and find out the kind of Life you want to create for yourself.
It took me weeks to get the answer. I asked myself series of question. Eventually, I discovered that money was not my primary goal but leading an exceptional life was. However money is one of the tools I will use to accomplish that.'
'The kind of life you want to live' he said to me,in one of his buildings in Victoria Island' determines the kind of income you will create'. He continued' you can choose active income and lead a passive life or you can choose an passive income and lead an active life. The emphasis on the kind of life you want to lead determine the kind of income you will work for '. That statements entered me and I realized that it is basically because we don't ask ourselves questions pertaining the kind of life we want to lead that get us stuck in the race of life.
There are 16 kinds of income people can create and it is only one of them that requires your personal effort. However, it amazes me that it is only the one that requires our personal effort that most of us still go for. We have been programmed to work for money and not make money work he'll us. You can change this mentality by accepting the reality that you can make money while sleeping. I have proven this in my life and stay with I will coach you on how you can create massive passive income in your life while you still have the life to lead a great life.

WHAT NOBODY TELLS YOU ABOUT BEING YOUNG AND SUCCESFUL

WHAT NOBODY TELLS YOU ABOUT BEING YOUNG AND SUCCESFUL
‘A society that cuts itself from its youth severe its lifeline, but a society that engage their interests, enlists their talents, and liberates their energies, brings hope to the entire world’-Nelson Mandela
As a young Nigerian , I don’t want to look back at my life and regret at the things I hoped for , but never attempted.I don’t want to utter the regretful words of ‘Would have, should have, could have’.I am the captain of my ship and the creator of my circumstances. The glory of the youths is in their strength, and right here in Nigeria a crop of youths are pursuing their dreams, not making excuses, standing tall in the midst of challenges that desires to dwarf their dreams. They are changemakers,on the marathon to success, making diamonds out of their clays inspite of skyrocketing unemployment, perennial black outs, endemic corruption. These youngsters have refused to give up, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. They are young starters, early risers, who have developed a sense of urgency towards their life’s journey believing in the maxim that:’The best time to plant a tree was ten years ago, the next best time is now’.In this piece I bring to you lessons we can learn ,adapt, and adopt to our lives, from young, influential, and high achieving youths.
1.Enlist your capabilities
From Whizkid to Mocheddah, Seyilaw to Helen paul, these youngsters all enlist their capabilities i.e their God given abilities and are making a living from it .As a talent development coach , I often tell my clients to learn the business side of their talent, because talent alone cannot pay the bills. It is talent and a strong eye for the money that pays the bills. Its not just enough to discover your talent and God given potentials, it is also imperative to learn how to profit from your talent, and meet the needs of your target audience.
2.Connect
Success is not a solo game, it’s a team sport that no one plays in isolation.History books are full of gifted people whose talents were overlooked until someone believed in them.Modupe oreoluwa popularly known as Mochedah is a living witness of this principle, same applies to Whizkid .His rise to the top of his game is obviously as a result of connecting to Banky W who saw the wealth in him, explored it, and created a product from it.Connection is the path that leads to your destination.
3.Start Small
These days I find it amazing that many young people desire to make it fast without paying their dues. They often ignore the counsel of starting small and growing big.Anything worthile takes time, and be cautious of moving too fast.In 2006, a 22 years old damsel started a blog focusing on lifestyle , fashion, entertainment, music, geared towards projecting the right image of Africa and inspiring Africans to make a difference in their world.Today, Uche Eze a.k.a Bellanaija, has grown the blog into establishing Bainstone corporation , company for Bellanaija in july of 2001 quitting her 9-5 to pursue her dream. She has appeared on Oprah and still taking her brainchild to the next level as a result of her resolve to start small.
4.Find your niche
A niche is your own zone, your own uniqueness , your own area of differentiation ne person who exemplifies this principle is Toyosi Akerele, the inimitable outspoken Founder of Rise Networks, who was recently honoured as a young African female leader to watch out for by Michell Obama.Toyosi has been able to make a name and a living for herself consulting and proffering solutions to youth developmental/empowerment issues.Through her annual youth seminars , enterprise development workshops for youths, she has stuck to her niche and enriching lives through it.Succeeding in a function of finding your own gold spot and sticking to it.
As a young Nigerian no one will believe in your dreams and aspirations .They may even call you names and tell you to be realistic. But the Real-ity lies in believing in the beauty of your dreams and pursuing it with unimaginable vigour.Stay hooked to your dreams. “Today we may appear young and people may not believe in us, but we are going to compel them to believe in us through our achievements."- Tony Elumelu. I will read your success story!
